Save Google Reader

Update 2: (1 pm EST 11/2) now up to 13,745 signatures with some love from Mashable and Weibo. Those signatures include many from Chinese and Iranian users upset about the loss of the ability to securely and horizontally share items outside of social networks like Google+ that are blocked in Iran and China.

Sidenote: who came up with the term “Sharebros”? Ugh — it’s gendered and conjures images of obnoxious popped collars — can everyone stop using the term please?

Also annoyed by Google Reader changes: Tyler Cowen and Brian Shih (who used to work at Google). Austin Frakt links to a script that fixes many of the aesthetic problems.

Update: (9 pm EST 10/26) up to 7,383 signatures, with links from TechCrunch and Andrew Sullivan. As those two posts note, a bunch of Iranian activists are quite upset over the pending removal of social features from Google Reader, as it allows them to share news and commentary horizontally even after the source websites are blocked (and other social networks are blocked). I had no idea about all that when I set up this petition. My original thought was that Google should add features to Plus rather than taking them away from Reader, and not try and force us over, just because as a user I was annoyed. But now it seems there’s an even better reason they should retain the social functions within Google Reader itself.  Hundreds if not thousands of the early signatures came from Iranians — you can see petition results here.

save the whales! and/or fail whaleFor those who don’t use Google Reader, you probably know it as just another RSS feed reader, so this post may not interest you at all.

For those of us who do use it it can be a major part of our daily routines. Last year I posted an “information flow audit” where I critiqued what and how much I read, along with how I prioritize information — all of which is done through Reader. Needless to say, I’m a heavy user. I think it’s the Google service I use most — more than search, and even more than GMail.

So I’m apprehensive about this announcement on the Google Reader blog (which I of course found through Reader) regarding upcoming changes to the service:

As a result of these changes, we also think it’s important to clean things up a bit. Many of Reader’s social features will soon be available via Google+, so in a week’s time we’ll be retiring things like friending, following and shared link blogs inside of Reader.

We think the end result is better than what’s available today, and you can sign up for Google+ right now to start prepping Reader-specific circles. We recognize, however, that some of you may feel like the product is no longer for you.

Basically, Google wants us all to use Google+, and it seems Reader is destined to go the way of other niche services like Buzz and Wave. In the likely misguided hope that Reader’s vocal users can make Google rethink this decision to push us towards Google+, or that they’ll at least keep an old version of Reader available indefinitely, I put together a brief petition in response. You can sign here or below:

I too am little disappointed in Google’s decision to kill the shared item following feature in Google Reader. Google Reader provided a way for me to follow what people were reading, and not their personal lives, which is essentially what Google+ will force me to do. If I think of my Google Reader usage pattern, I use it follow shared items, not people –personalities. I am not interested in personal lives of strangers. I simply don’t care about what you had for breakfast. I don’t use Facebook, Google+ etc for the same reason. In fact I don’t even like those platforms because of the unnecessary information overload they create. Whereas, I have been actively using Google Reader since the day it was released. Google Reader doesn’t bother me with personal lives of the people I am following on the Reader. It is like going to someone’s place and browsing their library without being concerned with their personal lives. I like that pattern.

I too hope that Google Reader lives on in its current form.

I agree with you both. Reader and the iGoogle service are great at looking getting info when sites are banned. Reader is really useful where governments don’t want populations to read everything that’s out on the web. This service is useful when states use information walls, and especially when protests break out or large scale violence occurs. E.g. How much has the lack of information from within Syria stymied the international pressure, and pressure on international leaders to act?

I think your campaign is correct. Google has put itself at a point where it provides a useful, social (in all senses) service with Reader. Info, news is shared further. One also gets a sense from the News trend of how the stories are doing. All this helps.

Brett, I don’t think they are going to discontinue Google Reader, they are just integrating the social features into Google+. Apparently they’ve been developing a new interface, which wouldn’t make much sense if they were going to pull the plug soon. It’s always disruptive when Google change a service that we’re used to, but in this case a redesign wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing. Honestly I find the current Google Reader setup (with sharing, stars, “likes”, notes, follows, and so on) confusing and distracting. But we’ll see how it turns out.

  3. 6

Rob — I think you’re right that, at least in the short-term it sounds like they won’t discontinue Google Reader altogether, but they did specifically say they’re getting rid of following and sharing, which are pretty core functions. It sounds to me like they’re hoping more of us will switch over to G+ since they’re removing those functions from reader, and/or that the new interface will draw in new people. ‘m hoping that the small group of dedicated users getting upset about the changes will make them rethink things, and am afraid that if we wait and see how it turns out it will be too late…

OK, well, I never figured out sharing in Google Reader, having been put off by the multiplicity of functions – but still I mysteriously have “followers”, not all of whom I know. I feel that the social features in Google+ are at least transparent and reasonably clear. Of course I won’t be so happy if the redesign makes it more difficult for me to ignore the social stuff and use Google Reader just for reading (but then I do understand that Google have to generate revenue from this somehow).

I don’t think Iranian users use Goder as it was designed to function! no weblog platform or any social networking could get us even near close to what we have here right now.
comparing both qualities and quantities of posts of a single person on different social based content platforms like Goder, Social networkings and blogs gives me a sad idea of what will I miss if I lose goder.
I consider Google reader as a classy platform of writing, reading and sharing thoughts which its name will appear on the wiki page of to be great authors as “he started by publishing on Goder” ….. 🙁

Make “Send to” Google+ easier to install in Reader, and leave it at that for integration. Yes, Reader isn’t as popular as we all would like, but it is vital to the world. Yes, it is.

Google must be shamed for what they’ve done to Google reader. It becomes much less informative without sharing functionality in. Change it back.
